The Best Treatment for Toenail Fungus, According to a Podiatrist

- Hi, this is Dr. Stuart

from Timonium foot and ankle center.

I want to share with you

my favorite treatment option for toenail fungus.

And that treatment is laser therapy.

Going back to our other treatment options,

topical medication has a fairly low success rate.

Topical medication works about 10 to 15 percent of the time.

And mostly it works on very, very superficial cases.

When I say superficial, if you look at the nail again,

you're talking about fungus

that's really just at the tip of the toenail.

Obviously, we're showing a fingernail,

but it's really at just the tip of the nail.

And it takes a lot of time and energy.

And the success rate is fairly low.

The other option, short of laser

is Lamisil therapy, oral medication.

Oral medication has about a 55 to 70 percent success rate.

However, a lot of times patients come in

and they don't want to take medications for their toenails.

Lamisil is a process, you do have to have blood work

before you start the medication.

You have to have blood work

in the middle of the medication.

There are some drug interactions that can occur.

There are some side effects

that can occur from the medication.

Some people complain of stomach upset.

Some people will get rash from the medication.

A metallic taste in the mouth.

Lamisil is something that a lot of people

just in general don't want to take.

You can't use alcohol

or you have to really limit alcohol intake

while you're on Lamisil.

So, most patients I find,

and I've been doing laser for over 10 years,

really don't want to take oral medication

and they don't want anything with side effects and risks.

And that's where laser has it's big advantage.

There are no risks with laser.

The only risk, really, that exists is, it may not work.

The success rate of laser is about 85 percent.

Lasers work by heating and destroying fungus in the nail.

And what they do

is they allow a healthy nail to grow out over time.

Again, going back to before,

we always need to use topical antifungal cream on the skin

and that has to be an indefinite process.

Meaning you have to continue to use that.

That's whether you're using lasers, topicals, pills,

but just keep in mind lasers quick, it's easy.

You come into the office, we clip your nails down,

we reduce your nails with a bur,

and in 20 minutes, you're out the door,

you're going back to doing whatever you want.

You can put your dress shoes on.

You can go dancing.

You can go to the gym.

You can play tennis.

There are no restrictions and no downtime.

That is why I love laser therapy.

We've been doing this for years.

We have hundreds of success stories with laser.
