it seems like there's a million
different mouthwashes
you walk down the aisle at a store and
there's like a million different brands
a million different color liquids so
your question is which one should I use
for this video I'm going to break it
down to the two main types of
mouthwashes that I learned about in
dental hygiene school so I suppose we
can kind of consider these two the two
main important ones and from there you
can decide which one is best for you
the two main mouth washes are
antiseptics and anti cavities also known
as fluorides let's talk about
antiseptics first antiseptics are good
for your gums so we're not specifically
worried about your teeth with these ones
we are more worried about the health of
your gums and fresh breath antiseptic
rinses help control plaque levels and
gingivitis or bleeding which in turn
helps freshen your breath oftentimes
these are the ones where you experience
that burning sensation so I always
recommend to use the zero or if it's
Listerine link Listerine zero or some
kind without alcohol
speaking of Listerine with that brand
there antiseptics are generally
color-coded actually all of there's a
color coded so they're usually the blue
and the green liquids but always check
the label because it will say anti
subject no matter what so that's how you
know for sure I usually recommend these
for patients to use in the morning you
can use them at night too but let me
tell you why anti cavity rinses or
fluoride rinses these are the ones that
are good for your teeth these are really
great for you to use before you go to
bed because after you swish with this
one after your rinse you're supposed to
wait 30 minutes before you eat or drink
anything so then you just simply swish
and then sleep these are really good at
helping prevent cavities so if you have
a history of cavities or your very
cavity prone this is a great one to add
to your routine especially before bed
and just so you know the way this one
works is that it's actually retained in
your plaque and saliva so it's like
sitting up so you want it to sit there
for thirty minutes if you rinse away or
drink something it's just gonna like
it's a waste of your time to even do it
because you just switched and then rinse
'we antiseptics are different though the
one we talked about before that's just a
freshman error it's not a big deal you
could rinse after no big deal again like
I said anti cavity rinses or fluoride
rinses these are the ones that are
really great if your cavity prone
however they're also great if you have
braces any kind of orthodontic stuff
going on or if you have dry mouth
they're really great for both of those
as well so if we're talking about
Listerine again because everyone knows
that brand this is usually a purple
liquid however always read the label
right because it'll tell you right on
the label Italy to say anti cavity or
fluoride just a personal note for me
I've been recommending act fluoride
rinse to my patients recently just
because I feel like although a lot of
the list rains will say like zero
alcohol they're still kind of stinging
burning in my opinion where is like the
zero alcohol act I just feel good the
whole time I'm not like my eyes aren't
hearing but everyone's different maybe
you like the burning stinging even
though it says zero alcohol it's still
you know what I'm saying
I think act is a little more not
stinging not burning like it truly has
that no alcohol feel that's just my
personal preference for fluoride rinses
although Listerine and act equally work
well I believe so it's really just like
what feels best in your mouth the thing
about act as well they don't have the
color-coding thing there's like a
million colors of the fluoride rinses
I'm actually using red right now for
cinnamon I love cinnamon it's for the
fluoride rinse it's so good and it
doesn't burn anyway back to the
educational portion of this if you have
both gum problems and cavity problems
you can use both that's just when the
great like regimen comes in you could
use the antiseptics in the morning and
the fluorides at night totally okay just
don't mix them I've had people ask if
they can mix them I don't know what that
would do but I wouldn't do it actually
it probably would like get rid of the
fluoride qualities again you would be
rinsing away no don't mix them all so I
get the question from people who are
super cavity prone can I use the
fluoride rinse in the morning and at
night totally go for it good for you for
being proactive I hope you already know
this but if you don't then listen up
mouthwash is do not and I repeat mouth
washes do not replace brushing and
flossing they will not make or break
your oral health if you're not properly
doing your foundation routine of
proper brushing and flossing or some
kind of cleaning in between your teeth
with interproximal brushes or water
flossers it's like if you're trying to
put on your eyeshadow without your
proper eye makeup foundation right I
don't know let's attempt at a makeup
analogy but please I just hope that
makes sense that you brush and floss
properly before you even consider adding
a mouthwash to your routine it's just an
adjunct it's just an in addition if
you're not brushing and frosting
properly then don't even get do that
first I hope this makes sense I hope
