email is inherently one of the most
insecure means of communication we have
today
however there are ways to use email in
more private and secure methods
despite these concerns today we're going
to cover five of the best services that
value your privacy and security so you
can communicate with everyone you know
a little bit safer a disclaimer some
options on this list will protect and
encrypt your emails to external contacts
who don't use pgp
which is fantastic but others don't we
will highlight which
do what another disclaimer we did our
best to put together options
based around privacy and security
practices not necessarily usability
which is a pretty important distinction
to make
and screw it most of this list came from
price tools ao we added our own flair
to things and condensed the information
down to you service 5
is sovereign a paid option based out of
amsterdam advertising to not
advertise to you or abuse your user data
they offer private signups to their
users
accepting traditional payment methods
but also bitcoin to make private payment
easy they allow custom domains and sub
addressing with integrated encryption
in their webmail simplifying sending
messages to
users another neat feature they offer is
a free personal webpage that comes with
your subscription
lastly they support two-factor
authentication but so does every service
on this list so this is the last you'll
hear about it
sovereign does have issues it's not open
source which is discouraging and there
are no mobile apps
it encrypts data at rest but it's not
zero access so theoretically it's
possible for them to access this data
contacts and calendar are also not end
and encrypted
for tour users there's there's no onion
service
in summary it's not a bad option you're
going to be better off with sovereign
than with something more
traditional but unless there's some
specific reason you trust or need a
feature they offer
most other services on this list will
probably perform better for you the
number four service on our list is
mailbox.org a
german provider advertising itself as
ad-free
and running on 100 eco-friendly energy
for the record
every service on this list is ad-free
there's no free option but the pricing
is ridiculously cheap
at just about a buck a month mailbox
supports custom domains catch all
addresses and sub addressing there is no
cryptocurrency option but they accept
cash by mail as well as traditional
payment methods
mailbox allows for encryption of
incoming and external mail
using their encrypted guard mailbox
which attempts to simplify open pgp
encryption
they allow external users to decrypt an
email through mailbox which is nice for
users who do not have
or use openpgp which is a big concern
mailbox supports discovery of public
keys through http through wkd
meaning users outside of mailbox.org can
find the open pgp keys of users easily
for end-to-end encryption
they also offer limited cloud storage
with your account as for cons
most of the service is not open source
they don't allow the webmail interface
through their onion service and they do
not encrypt your contacts and
calendar as a whole this is a decent
cheap option for users looking for a
robust
provider but again there are issues our
third on the list is another german
service tudonota is one of the most
popular open source email clients also
using 100 renewable energy the most
attractive thing about tutanota is the
generous free option but
outside of that they implement some
great security practices
there's zero access encryption at rest
with emails contacts and calendars
to denote is open source with their app
being on f droid for those wanting a
fast android experience check out some
of the other apps that we've looked at
they encrypt emails for external users
so people not using the service
will need a password to view the
contents of the email this is a major
misconception about this service as well
as the next service we'll cover as
external users do benefit from the
encryption you can also use up to five
aliases and
custom domains some cons to the noda is
currently limited to its webmail and
applications with no supports for
external apps
they do not use pgp so users can only
receive encrypted emails when external
users send them through a temporary to
donota inbox
to improve this issue it's on their
radar to implement autocrypt support
they only accept credit cards and paypal
if you're going with a paid plan which
will add some difficulty in obtaining
the account privately they also do not
operate an onion site but
are considering it with a free plan
2dnoda would really have zero
information about you and it implements
fantastic open source security with the
option to encrypt emails
to external contacts and its main
limitations seem to be on their radar to
fix over time which is exciting for
their future so let's keep an eye onto
the node and hope that they
keep things going up service number two
is the beyond
popular protonmail they're based out of
switzerland with a generous free plan
which like tutanota makes it beyond
simple to create a private account with
no personal information which is great
for pseudonyms
the rest of this analysis will assume
you're using paid protonmail but free
includes the same general privacy and
security functionality just not the
extra features
protonmail allows custom domains
catch-all addresses and sub-addressing
all with the ability to use
external email clients with protonmail
bridge they accept bitcoin as well as
traditional payment methods making it
possible to
sign up for a paid account pretty
privately their data encryption is
pretty simple zero access encryption at
rest for your emails contacts and
calendars for their email encryption
they have integrated openpgp
messages to other protonmail users are
automatically encrypted and encryption
to non-proton mail users
with open pgp can be enabled but by
default it's just going to be a standard
however like 2d noda and the mailbox
protonmail offers a simple way to
encrypt messages to external users
without the need for them to use open
pgp but rather a password requirement in
the email
i've always loved this especially since
it's self-destructing after a set amount
of time
proton allows public key discovery
through wkd for end-to-end encryption
and they offer a fully fledged onion
service the only one on the list to do
that
outside of protonmail this can also be
integrated with proton vpn a proton
calendar
and likely more in the future whatever
protons gonna do like
proton drive whenever that's gonna come
out oh and
everything they do is open source
including their apps and they're the
only service on this list that has been
audited
the main con to protonmail is honestly
probably the price it's pricey if you go
with one of the more robust options
but they do offer a free plan which
makes this a bit more acceptable um if
it works for you i use the free plan for
my personal life and it works for me so
protons really hard to beat since
there's not really that much to complain
about so how are they not
number one well they kind of are for
something that's simple
at least the number one option which i
warn you won't be good for most of you
is gmail just just kidding it's to
self-host your own email
you're going to lose a lot of the nifty
features and the easy experience the
other providers offer
you're gonna have to put some time
effort and money into getting it set up
and if you misconfigure anything it
could be disastrous for your securities
it sounds pretty terrible um however
there's no other way to pretty much
guarantee you own your data privacy and
security
better than if you did it yourself this
is not simple and many would recommend
against it including myself
but it's hard to deny that if you want
the max peace of mind and if you have
the technical knowledge to do so
it's a great option if this is the path
you want to head a good place to start
is reading up on mail in the box and
mail cal i'll also leave a couple more
in-depth sources on how to get this all
set up
in a description if you're asking how to
do it
you likely shouldn't and you should look
at other services on this list unless
there is a learning experience involved
and you're not planning on using this as
your main email provider
that my friends was our top 5 email
recommendations
we highly recommend moving to one of
these options to avoid things like gmail
and other common providers that are
analyzing everything you type and send
without the best possible security in
mind take
control of the way you communicate and
there's really no excuse as two options
on this list have generous free plans
and another only cost a buck a month so
come on don't sell out people
if you're looking to move to a new email
provider make sure to subscribe as it's
on our radar to one day walk you through
the entire process of transitioning to a
new email
as it can be a very lengthy process if
you want the basics i alluded to the
process quite a bit in our video going
through how to delete google
so check that out for more information
if you like this video and want to
support our work
give it a like below and go check out
our patreon to directly support what we
do
lastly what is your favorite email
provider what do you use
leave it below we're only going to use
that information to break into your
accounts
thanks for watching everybody and have a
great day and for those who want to see
it
yeah there it is
