Does trade promote peace?

I was in Italy in the summer of two

thousand and one when the

anti-globalization protests turned

deadly and since then I followed with

great interest the opposition to trade

initiatives that is so closely tied to

economic globalization opponents suggest

that globalization brings conflict

strife social inequality proponents of

economic globalization argue the exact

opposite that greater trade

interconnectivity will bring peace and

prosperity to the world who is right as

the 17th century cannon guarding the

doors of the extra custom house behind

me suggests this is far from just a 21st

century problem far from it that's why

the history of trade and empire can

offer much needed insight into

contemporary debates over globalization
